OVERVIEW Guidance Advisors are FIC alumni who work closely with the Student Success Advising Team to provide academic and interpersonal support to FIC students. ELIGIBILITY This program is only available to FIC students who have successfully transferred to SFU. All applicants are required to submit a Confidential Recommendation Form to be considered. BENEFITS OF JOINING Guidance Advisors receive training on everything FIC, such as program requirements, volunteer opportunities, medical insurance, and event planning with a student centered approach to advising. They also provide information about transferring to SFU based on their personal experiences. This opportunity is for you if you are an empathetic listener, are passionate about supporting new incoming international students and want to build on your transferable skills, competencies, and professionalism. TIME COMMITMENT The Guidance Advisor Program is a 1-year or 3-semester commitment. Guidance Advisors are expected to commit about 20 volunteer hours per month, comprised of weekly advising shifts, monthly training sessions, and occasional additional opportunities. Training is scheduled over the weekend (Saturday or Sunday) on a monthly basis, while shifts are typically 4 hours each week, which can be done over 1 single shift or split into 2 shifts, 2 hours each. (for example, 12PM-4PM on Tuesdays, or 12PM - 2PM every Monday & Wednesdays). APPLICATION PROCEDURE Eligible applicants will be invited to be interviewed. Successful applicants are required to attend both Student Leadership Training (SLT) and Guidance Advisor Training in order to be accepted into the program. IMPORTANT DATES Interview will be held sometime between October 23-27 at FIC. Date may be subject to change and we will reach out to confirm. Student Leadership Training is Sunday, November 5th.
